Shiva's Poison

As the mythical story goes there is poison in the throat of shiva which he can neither spit out nor swallow, as if he spits it out it would cause panic in the world and he would lose his fame, if he swallows it would kill him !
Well it seems our Maryada Purshotam Pathi's singh's have trapped themselves in a similar situation.I was at a distant relative's home where they had commissioned a "Vidhi poorvak Akhand Paath". Well now, the Pathi has respect because he does all the "Paath paraphernalia " according to the prescribed maryada . And the Prescribed methodology forbids them to stop the reading any time . Now, what happened was that , as it was a kind of a family reunion , many relatives had got together , they started talking in th other room .This was causing a lot of noise , and even the pathi could not hear his own voice. Now he was in a situation where he could neither stop the path and tell the people to be quite, nor could he continue to read the bani properly ( and for whom?).
Had our ancestors not accepted the pujari tricks of Khandit / Akahnd paths, we would not have had such situations. Had we maintained the our respect for bani and tried to learn from it , we would not have created a situation where no one listens to it , but if the recital is stopped then it is considered a disaster / Anarth.

As for those wondering what happened next ? Well some old Maryada sensitive relative asked everyone to talk in a different room! Didn't tell them to listen to the path.

Dear S. Gaganpreet Singh,
A group of students (three girls and two boys) from Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is visiting IISc Bangalore to attend a conference in February. Can you please suggest some suitable place for accommodation? It will be better if it is in some Gurudwara Sahib. If possible give some contact numbers of Gurudwara Sahib. Of course they are accompanied by two lady teachers.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Regards,
Paramjit

We have no respect for the Bani as it is evident from the fact that while Keertan is going on, people in Sangat have their stuff to talk about. But it is more disrespect when Bani is read at home (like Akhand Path, or even Nitnem) and there is no one to listen to it. You are right when your post indicates that Sikhs have fallen back into the dark pit that Guru Sahibs took us out of. People go to Gurudwaras and ask the Bhais to do Akhand Paath, and pay them a price for doing that without doing seva. Even worse, I have heard that some place (Gurudwara) you can pay for Akhand Paath that has been concluded in past and the "Bhav" or "Phal" goes to the reason you wanted to have an Akhand Paath. Clearly it is Bipran Kee Reet... Guru Sahib have said it clearly, "Dharam Karam Pakhand jo Deesaye, Tin Jaam Jagati Lootaye".

Anyhow, I came to your blog to listen to those young Sikhs singing Bani, a post you had few months back and found this new post by you and I could not help posting my views.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh,
Veer Ji reading of Guru Granth sahib as you have said Akhand path is not wrong at all.But the condition should have been that, the person should do himself along with his family and should not hire a granthi to do that. Clearly this is not followed at all and we Sikhs have fallen back to those dark pits from where our Guru Sahib had lifted us. Gurbani has to be first understood and followed.

How do all of you suggest we resolve this issue of disrespect during Akhand Paath - If not in all gurudwaras then atleast in our families?
E.g. maybe doing Sahej Paath at home instead where atleast the person doing the Paath would read without stress making it more probable that he/she would absorb the meaning of the Paath.
From where I stand i see 2 sides to it the personal and the social:
1) personal: for my self I prefer I read and learn from the guru directly. Isn't that the case with any subject we learn? we pay the highest to get the best personal tutor ? What better tutor than Guru Granth Sahib is there to teach about truth. ( if language is a problem I should get a language tutor not a translator {pathi in this case} for such an important thing i life. Imagine working for years on a PHD with the help of a translator.)

2)Socially: due to our weakness on the personal side we have recreated the pujari in sikhi. The Gurdwaras have become centers of gundaraj politics rather than Statesmanship( Miri) and the activities over there are being run by wage labor or fake saints, instead of the sangat (piri). The only solution in my eyes seems to be that we improve ourselves and during that process share our views those around us and one by one build a movement of the sangat away from the stupidities of the present.
